Introduction

Aarakshan (2011), directed by Prakash Jha, is a socio-political drama starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Manoj Bajpayee, Deepika Padukone, and Prateik Babbar. The film tackles the controversial issue of caste-based reservations in India's educational and job sectors, sparked by a Supreme Court ruling. The narrative centers around the conflict between a teacher and his mentor, set against the backdrop of the reservations policy.
However, the film was embroiled in controversy due to its director's political affiliations. In Bhopal, civic authorities demolished the film's sets, built on disputed land. In Kanpur, pro-Dalit groups protested Saif Ali Khan's casting as a Dalit, citing his royal background as an insult to the community. The film faced bans in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh before its release. Punjab's government feared it could stir communal tensions, while the Uttar Pradesh government worried about law and order issues. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) reviewed the film and found certain dialogues anti-Dalit and anti-reservation, though the censor board defended the director's right to free expression. In response, Jha and the producers edited the film. They later moved the Supreme Court, which lifted the ban in Uttar Pradesh. The film also faced a surprise mid-screening ban in Gurgaon.
Though Aarakshan garnered mostly positive reviews, it performed poorly at the box office, finishing as a below-average grosser.

आरक्षण (2011) के निर्देशक प्रकाश झा हैं। यह फ़िल्म एक ज्वलंत सामाजिक-राजनैतिक मुद्दे पर बनी ड्रामा फ़िल्म है जिसमें अमिताभ बच्चन, सैफ़ अली खान, मनोज बाजपेयी, दीपिका पादुकोण और प्रतीक बब्बर जैसे अभिनेताओं ने मुख्य भूमिकाएँ निभाई हैं। फ़िल्म की कहानी भारत के शिक्षा और रोज़गार क्षेत्र में लागू जाति-आधारित आरक्षण की नीति पर उठे विवाद को अपना विषय बनाती है। आरक्षण की सरकारी नीति को कहानी की पृष्ठभूमि में रखते हुए फ़िल्म एक युवा अध्यापक और उसके आदर्श व्यक्तित्व के बीच की कशमकश दिखाती है।
हालाँकि फ़िल्म को निर्माण के दौरान अपने निर्देशक के राजनैतिक जुड़ाव के चलते विवादों का सामना करना पड़ा। भोपाल में नगरपालिका अधिकारियों ने फ़िल्म के सेट को यह कहकर ध्वस्त कर दिया कि वो विवादित ज़मीन पर खड़ा किया गया है। कानपुर में कई दलित अधिकार समर्थक समूहों ने अभिनेता सैफ़ अली खान को दलित की भूमिका में लेने का यह कहते हुए कड़ा विरोध किया कि वे राजसी खानदान से आते हैं और उन्हें वंचित किरदार की भूमिका में लेना समुदाय का अपमान है। फ़िल्म को उत्तर प्रदेश, पंजाब और आंध्र प्रदेश में प्रतिबंध का सामना करना पड़ा। उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार को राज्य की कानून व्यवस्था बिगड़ने का खतरा था तो पंजाब सरकार को डर था कि फ़िल्म के चलते मज़हबी तनाव खड़ा हो सकता है। भारत सरकार के 'राष्ट्रीय अनुसूचित जाति आयोग' (एनसीएससी) ने फ़िल्म की समीक्षा की और पाया कि कुछ संवाद दलित विरोधी और आरक्षण विरोधी हैं, लेकिन सेंसर बोर्ड (सीबीएफ़सी) ने निर्देशक की अभिव्यक्ति की आज़ादी का बचाव किया। पर इसके जवाब में निर्देशक प्रकाश झा और निर्माताओं ने फ़िल्म का कुछ हिस्सा संपादित करना ठीक समझा। प्रतिबंध के खिलाफ़ उन्होंने सुप्रीम कोर्ट का रुख़ किया, जिसके निर्णय के बाद उत्तर प्रदेश में फ़िल्म पर से प्रतिबंध हटाया गया। गुड़गाँव में तो ऐसी घटना भी हुई जहाँ फ़िल्म को स्क्रीनिंग के बीच में रोका गया।
आरक्षण को आलोचकों की ओर से अधिकतर सकारात्मक प्रतिक्रिया मिली, लेकिन टिकट खिड़की पर यह फ़िल्म कामयाब नहीं रही। इसकी कमाई औसत से कम ही रही।
