Emergency
25 June 1975, it followed a period of political unrest, economic difficulties and growing opposition to the Congress government. On the eve of the Emergency, leaders including Jayaprakash Narayan, Morarji Desai, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L. K.
Advani, George Fernandes and Charan Singh were arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act.
When elections were finally announced in January 1977, the opposition united as the Janata Party. Its victory in the subsequent election brought the first non-Congress government to power at the Centre, making the Emergency a lasting reminder of both the fragility of democratic institutions and the power of political resistance.
