Rajit Kapoor
Rajit Kapur (born 27 August 1963) He is an Indian film, television, and theatre actor and director, widely recognised for his versatility and nuanced performances across diverse media. He gained national acclaim for his portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in The Making of the Mahatma (1996), a performance that earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Among his other notable performances are the role of Unni in the acclaimed Malayalam film Agnisakshi (1999) and the fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi in the eponymous television series Byomkesh Bakshi, directed by Basu Chatterjee and broadcast on Doordarshan. His feature film debut was in Shyam Benegal's Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (1992).
Born on 27 August 1963 in Amritsar, Punjab, into a Punjabi family, Kapur completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree at Sydenham College. He is unmarried and has no children.
Kapur's association with acting began at the age of twelve when he appeared in a children's television drama on Doordarshan. A decade later, while working as a stage manager, he secured his first significant television acting role in the series Ghar Jamai. His transition to cinema came with Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (1992), marking the beginning of a distinguished career in Indian cinema.
In 1993, Kapur portrayed the celebrated Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshi in the television adaptation Byomkesh Bakshi, based on the detective stories of Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay and directed by Basu Chatterjee. The series achieved widespread popularity and established Kapur as a prominent television actor, bringing him his first major public recognition.

He starred in Deepti Naval's Do Paise Ki Dhoop, Chaar Aane Ki Baarish (2009), which was originally scheduled for theatrical release in India in 2012 but was eventually released on Netflix in 2019. In 2022, he made his debut in Punjabi cinema with Birha – The Journey Back Home. The film received considerable international recognition, winning Best Film awards at the Amsterdam International Film Festival, Hollywood Shorts FEST, Los Angeles Film Awards (LAFA), New York Indian Film Festival, Calcutta International Cult Film Festival, and the Gangtok International Film Festival.
In 2023, Kapur appeared in Mission Majnu and Mujib: The Making of a Nation, portraying Pakistan's Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in both productions. His screen appearances also include The Threshold (2015).
Throughout his career, Kapur has received numerous honours in recognition of his outstanding performances. He was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor for The Making of the Mahatma (1996), the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for Agnisakshi (1999), and the Best Actor Award at the Imagine India Film Festival, Spain, in 2010 for his performance in Do Paise Ki Dhoop, Chaar Aane Ki Baarish (2009).
