Manoj Kumar

Born Harikrishan Giri Goswami, Manoj Kumar was an eminent Indian actor, director, screenwriter, lyricist and editor whose career left an enduring imprint on Hindi cinema. Celebrated for his portrayals in patriotism-themed films, he came to be widely known as “Bharat,” a title that underscored both his screen persona and his deep association with nationalist narratives. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he appeared in 55 films and came to be regarded as one of the most accomplished figures in Indian cinema.

Kumar received several of India's highest honours, including the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. His accolades also encompassed a National Film Award and seven Filmfare Awards.

Born in Abbottabad, in present-day Pakistan, Kumar hailed from a Punjabi Hindu (Saraswat Brahmin) family. At the age of ten, he migrated with his family to Delhi during the Partition. After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hindu College, he adopted the screen name Manoj Kumar, inspired by Dilip Kumar's character in the 1949 film Shabnam.

Kumar made his film debut with Fashion (1957) and went on to secure his first leading role in Kaanch Ki Gudiya (1961). His breakthrough arrived with Vijay Bhatt's Hariyali Aur Rasta (1962), which established him as a bankable star. He followed this with a series of commercially successful films, including Shaadi (1962), Dr. Vidya (1962) and Grahasti (1963). His performance in Raj Khosla's thriller Woh Kaun Thi? (1964) further consolidated his standing in the industry.

The year 1965 marked a turning point with the release of the patriotic drama Shaheed, based on the life of Bhagat Singh. The film earned critical acclaim and strong support from Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Kumar subsequently delivered notable performances in Himalay Ki God Mein and Gumnaam.

In 1970, Purab Aur Paschim achieved exceptional success both in India and overseas, setting box-office records in the United Kingdom. The mid-1970s brought further acclaim with the blockbuster Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974), followed by Sanyasi (1975) and Dus Numbri (1976). Kumar later directed the 1981 historical epic Kranti, featuring an ensemble cast.

After retiring from cinema, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2004 general election. Manoj Kumar died on 4 April 2025 at the age of 87 due to chronic cardiac complications, with decompensated liver cirrhosis cited as a secondary cause. As of 2025, he remains one of Bollywood's most successful actors, with over half of his films achieving box-office success and several of his directorial ventures drawing tens of millions of viewers across India.
