Introduction

Daddy (1989) Made-for-television, the film produced for Doordarshan and directed by Mahesh Bhatt, occupies a distinctive place in Indian cinema for its emotional candour and restrained realism. The film marked the acting debut of Bhatt's eldest daughter, Pooja Bhatt, and is remembered for the extraordinary performances of its principal cast, particularly Anupam Kher and Manohar Singh. Enhancing its lasting appeal was the haunting ghazal Aaina Mujhse Meri Pehli Si Surat Maange, sung by Talat Aziz, which became an enduring musical classic.

Alongside Pooja Bhatt and Anupam Kher, the film featured a strong ensemble cast that included Soni Razdan, Neena Gupta, Manohar Singh, Sulbha Arya, Avtar Gill, Suhas Joshi, Raj Zutshi, Pramod Moutho, Satish Kaushik, and Akash Khurana, each contributing depth to the narrative through finely etched supporting roles.

The story centres on Pinky (Pooja), a young woman raised by her grandparents, who grows up believing that her father is dead and with no memory of her parents. Her grandfather, Kantaprasad, (Manohar Singh) shields her from a painful past by maintaining this illusion. As Pinky comes of age, she begins receiving anonymous phone calls from a man who says only, “I love you,” before disconnecting. When the calls are traced, the caller is revealed to be Anand (Anupam Kher), her estranged father—a once-celebrated music composer now reduced to a destitute alcoholic. Kantaprasad violently drives him away, warning him never to contact Pinky again. Fate intervenes when Anand rescues Pinky from an attempted assault, forcing her to confront the truth about her father's identity and his tragic decline.

Notably, Mahesh Bhatt altered the film's climax just a day before it was shot, a decision shaped by his own contemporaneous struggle with alcoholism, lending the film an added layer of personal authenticity. The narrative's emotional core lies in the fragile bond between a broken father and a daughter determined to save him.

The film's music, composed by Rajesh Roshan with lyrics by Suraj Sanim, was widely acclaimed. Songs such as Ghar Ke Ujiyare So Ja Re (based on Raag Tilak Kamod), Aaina Mujhse Meri Pehli Si Surat Maange, Main Adhoora Sa Ek Geet Hoon, and Wafa Jo Tumse Kabhi Maine Nibhai Hoti resonated deeply with audiences.

Critically and commercially successful, Daddy won several prestigious honours, including the Filmfare Critics Award and the National Film Award (Special Jury) for Anupam Kher, the Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue for Suraj Sanim, and the Filmfare Lux New Face of the Year Award for Pooja Bhatt. The film's enduring relevance was reaffirmed through a theatrical adaptation directed by Dinesh Gautam, first staged in 2015, which also achieved the rare distinction of being presented at an international theatre festival in Pakistan.
