Bees Saal Baad (1962) was a psychological thriller film directed by Biren Nag in his directorial debut. Produced by Hemant Kumar, who also composed the music and lent his voice to some songs, the film stars Biswajeet, Waheeda Rehman, Madan Puri, Sajjan and Asit Sen. A loose adaptation of the Bengali thriller Jighansa (1951), which itself drew inspiration from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, Bees Saal Baad also takes cues from Hemendra Kumar Roy's novel Nishithini Bivishika. The film became a massive hit in 1962, topping the box-office and earning the status of a "super hit." Its success was driven largely by its haunting music, particularly the iconic song "Kahin Deep Jale", sung by Lata Mangeshkar and written by Shakeel Badayuni. This song earned both Mangeshkar and Badayuni Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and Best Lyricist, respectively. Mangeshkar's performance was especially remarkable as it marked her return to singing after a serious throat infection had forced her to stop for a while. Kahin Deep Jale was the first song she recorded post-recovery. Other memorable tracks from the film include "Bekarar Karke Hume" by Hemant Kumar, "Sapne Suhane" by Lata Mangeshkar, "Yeh Mohabbat Mein" by Lata Mangeshkar, and "Zara Nazaron Se Kah Do Ji" by Hemant Kumar, all of which became enduring hits. Upon its release, Bees Saal Baad was widely praised for its captivating storyline, atmospheric horror elements, and the strong performances by Waheeda Rehman and Biswajeet. The film's eerie atmosphere and gripping music contributed significantly to its popularity. The film was honoured with four Filmfare Awards: Best Lyricist for Shakeel Badayuni (for "Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil"), Best Female Playback Singer for Lata Mangeshkar (for the same song), Best Editing to Keshav Nanda, and Best Sound Design to S. Y. Pathak.
